One of the weird "side effects" of it being the World Cup is that our TV is pretty much always on ESPN or ESPN2. That's how I heard about this jackass:

"Outspoken Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen apologized Wednesday for using a derogatory term in referring to Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti, then kept up his criticism of the writer."

The rest of the story from ESPN.

He said "What a piece of [expletive] he is, [expletive] fag." about a reporter he is feuding with then back pedals with the old 'I have gay friends' and (I love this) 'I go to WNBA games!' as proof of his lack of homophobia. You may remember him equating gay with child molester a while a go in New York.

As the commentator and the author point out, the shocking part is he's pretty much continued in this vein with out repercussions.

I saw this in my daily search for a gay news link to post in my blog. Can't say I'm surprised. What does surprise me is that more professional sports figures aren't caught using homophobic language.

I think they're media savvy enough to know it'll cost them (salary and endorsements). This gay was actually fined, but I don't think it'll make a big difference for him personally.
