...Part of a text message I received tonight from Betsy, my best friend from high school.
I went to Chikalicious and had caramel panna cota (SP?) with banana ice cream and cilantro gelatin cubes in a prosecco "bubble bath". It sounds odd but it was amazing. Bananas and prosecco are among my favorite things. The amuse was a carrot puree with a vanilla soy sorbet. The carrot was so pure and sweet. Actually, everything they do is about purity of favor/ingredients. And it's so cool to watch them assemble/plate things.
"A Parsifal" was good but a little over my head. I'll have to revisit the Parsifal myth tomorrow and see if I can connect the dots that were left gaping (for me) tonight. The set was stark white with some layers and Parsifal emerges nude with an Uzi in the first few minutes. All I could think of was those old Calvin Klein ads. And the swan costume made me think of Bjork. I know - I should have been stoned to death outside the theater.
Sometimes, I'm more taken with individual aspects of a performance instead of the whole and my mind starts running on a tangent about them - like figuring out a how a lighting feature is done. I'd love a big empty space to create things in - sets or what not that I could then tear down and replace with new ones. That's my ideal retirement - or a kind form of being institutionalized. If the supplies kept arriving and I could go out on field trips I don't think I'd even mind.
The principals in this production were good but the secondaries were distracting, if that makes sense. They were "Acting" - actually, I'd swear some of them were modeling. I don't blame them entirely, there's that walk post modern plays tend to have that is just so affected. It's totally runway and very distracting. The trouble is it's really hard for the actors to walk like that and not have the rest of their body and face scream "Zoolander!".
