Quit Bitching
Nov. 10th, 2008 06:30 pmI am probably going to catch Hell for this but I am so over people complaining about Prop 8 passing.
First, it was not the only anti gay measure passed - yes, it's in the most surprising of the states with such ballot measures, but it's not alone. It's not the first in recent history either. Can we have a little outrage for ALL Queers and not just the entitled ones in the big "gay" cities?
How about some outrage over the rise in gay bashings?
Before you make your sign and sassy protest T shirt - have you written your reps? Do they know where you stand? If you live in New York state - call your rep NOW. Have you spoken to your parents about it? Your coworkers? The people at church? A rally on TV is nothing compared to a one on one conversation with some one you "know". Please don't even try the "it's complicated" or "my parents are from a different generation" - they VOTE so they need to be educated.
If you've given anything to religious institution in the past few years, you should take a hard look at things. I fall in this category myself.
Can we stop making the "like African Americans were" analogies? It is not the same thing. Most gays pass as straight, often without trying. We do not face the same level of discrimination out of hand and we certainly are not coming from the same level of historic prejudice in this country. Pretending we do just muddies the water.
Yes, this is incredibly unjust. Yes, we need to fight it. But let's actually DO something productive about it. Protests are fine but they need to be a part of a larger plan involving informed ACTION. Crying out "Poor Me!" and "I'm a Slave!" won't change anything, in fact the face of selfish entitlement sets us back. Yell and march and then vote and work the system. It sucks, it's corrupt but it's what we have.
