On Roberts - A Reversal?
Sep. 14th, 2005 07:52 amI've been following the confirmation hearings of Judge John Roberts with great interest. If he is confirmed as Chief Justice (which seems pretty certain) he will shape the Supreme Court for years to come.
While his refusal to answer direct questions about abortion and the absence of any real knowledge of his stance on gay rights troubles me, his stance that he will be "his own man" gives me a little hope.
Roberts is pretty clear on the memos and work he did while working for the White House were not based on his own opinions. He presented legal opinion based on what the Administration wanted. He said the same of his pro bono work for a gay rights group.
It may be naive of me, but (being that he's pretty much a sure thing) I like to believe Roberts is a moderate in a conservative wolf's clothing. Time will tell - let's hope it proves me right.
