Upstairs Online
Dec. 9th, 2004 09:09 amIt's weird but I'm actually enjoying this trip. I leave tonight and can't wait to get home to Mr Bear and I do feel awful about missing his cabaret Christmas act with the chorus but I've loved being with my team mates. They're a great bunch and we have a lot of fun. There's something wonderful about working with the same 18 people for 5 years.
Since I know I'm leaving the company in August no matter what happens, the "will they lay us off?" drama is more of an interesting soap opera than something I'm staying up nights about. I know my team mates are worried about it but no one seems really concerned - like they would be broken if they were laid off.
Our entire team in incredibly over qualified for what our jobs are becoming. They use Frontpage, so no development and what we each currently do is broken out into 3 different positions. Even if they do keep us I doubt most of my team would last long. We're already bored as a group now because we don't get to do a lot of development, etc. If that all is given t IT (how Cingular does it) it would be ridiculous. I have never felt so skilled in my life. :-)
Our Cingular counter parts are a bit threatened by our skill set. They weren't real friendly. The evil joke on our side was the plot to start every sentence with "When I was at MIT..." or "before we took Amazon public..". We're honestly empathetic and in the same boat - but as a group we were a bit offended by some of the stuff that's happened.
Our trainers are actually our counterparts from their team and have warmed to us. they invited us to meet the others after class today. Hopefully that goes well. This whole process is awkward enough for everyone as it is.
As a team we've been on "good behavior" though it's slowly breaking down. We're still work place appropriate in meetings but it's sliding. We all know it and are sort of amused - I don’t think any of us thought we could maintain "corporate" for this long.
Last night a group of us went to Ten Degrees South for dinner - South African. It was cuisine - high end versions of traditional food. A few thought it would be straight traditional but no one was really disappointed. The food was fantastic. On the way to the restaurant we drove past a log cabin edged in purple neon fronted by a big sign reading "Love Shack". We stopped on the way home to see if the sold T shirts. They didn't but we amused ourselves with staring down the "straight" men coming out of the video booths.
OK, it's time for me to pack up and get ready to check out and hit my last meeting. I'm not doing well at not making comments or asking questions. My theory is they won't keep the folks who seem unengaged or like slackers. I aspire to that vibe but am not getting anywhere near it. I've taken to saying "Joanne wants to ask but she's shy" when Joanne sat next me. The trainers know I want to be cut and crack up.
OK, time to go.
Today I am Grateful For
Having enough
Mr Bear
My team mates - they make this job worth doing
Chinese food - I must get the picture from the party
My new sneakers
Malt balls
Things I Want Today
A massage
For this meeting to be MUCH shorter than they think it will be
To see Mr Bear and the girls - I miss them
