"At Swim, Two Boys"
I am loving this book. A big thank you to
chriskomater for recommending it. I'm just getting into the books I added to my reading list in September.
"At Swim, Two Boys" is about two boys, Jim and Doyler, who fall in love in Ireland over the year 1916/1916. Jim's a shy student whose father runs a little shop and dreams of being middle class. Doyler's dad is an alcoholic who is wasting away in a hovel with his big family on the the wrong side of town. The novel chronicles their relationship, their families trials, their discovering an allie in a middle class queer exiled from London and their countries race toward the rebellion of Easter 1916.
It's a thick, epic book and I can't explain it well. I'm still too immersed in the world of it. .Here is the review from The New York Times on the author's site.
I totally recommend it. :-)
